Riding Out a Recession All The Way From Glasgow to Spain

The biting recession has clearly hit travel companies hard. First, the airlines faced problems due to the soaring costs of fuel, eventually leading to the downfall of XL and Zoom and massive losses at British Airways. Then rail and bus giant FirstGroup announced that it is to cut costs by more than £200 million across its businesses in the UK and North America by shedding jobs. However, apparently one of the countrys most debt ridden demographics, students, still aren’t finding it difficult to go on holiday and ride out the recession.

A group of students from Glasgow University have managed to blag their way to Spain for free as part of a Comic Relief challenge. Wouldn’t be the first time a student had blagged something for free.

The quartet attempted to see how far they could get from the Glasgow academic institute in 48 hours without spending a penny. By the end of the 48 hours, the group had managed to scrounge a number of free rides on buses, trains and even flights to sunny Spain where they went one step further and even managed to blag free meals and a stay in a hotel in Alicante.

One of the group, undergraduate Chris Jones commented that they were surprised by their achievement, stating “we exceeded our expectations”. The achievement is now listed in the Guiness Book of Records as the first and only time a student, or group of students, have ever exceeded expectations…

Flats to Rent East Kilbride

As my girlfriend and I are currently doing some flat hunting, I’ve noticed a disconcerting trend in flats to let in Glasgow city centre, there are no ideal flats to rent!

The problem is, all the nice, newly developed buildings are in what I would class as, for a lack of a better term, seriously scummy areas. On the other end of the spectrum, in the nice areas, all the flats for rent are a bit grotty and would result in a lot of unconscious and unhappy cats should you decide to try swinging them (by the way, who came up with the idea of swinging a cat as a means of determining space?!). It seems either there are no nice places up for rent in equally nice areas. Therefore, we have had to broaden our area of search to outwith the city centre.

Previously, to me anyway, this had been unthinkable! Centrality is critical surely?! Well actually, I’m beginning to rethink this position. When I see the much more wallet friendly pricing and increased number of nice flats in respectable areas, I can see why people choose to live outwith the city centre. Towns like East Kilbride and Paisley have thrived on this kind of thinking. There are significantly increasing numbers of new(ish) development flats to rent in these areas as demand increases in the rental market. A search for flats to rent east kilbride alone shows a huge number of places available, little wonder then that our clients at The Property Store in East Kilbride are keeping busy!
