"Say "hello" to my "durable medical equipment"!"
Yahoo news had an interesting little story that caught my eye today, apparently there aren’t enough people in possession of firearms in America. Thankfully however, the clever people at Constitution Arms are now catering single shot, easily concealable stopping power for the elderly and the disabled, and on prescription to boot!
The Palm Pistol, an ergonomically designed, single 9mm shot pistol designed to fit in the palm of the hand with the barrel protruding between the fingers and fired by depressing a thumb stud on the top, has been certified as a Class I Medical Device by the US Food and Drug Administration. This may mean that, if the manufacturers are successful in having the weapon deemed “durable medical equipment” (“What?!” – yes, I thought so too), doctors will be able to prescribe the pistol to elderly patients or certain people, such as those who have had fingers amputated. Patients will then be able to recoup the cost via their medical insurance.
“Point and shoot couldn’t be easier!” the manufacturers have proudly claimed, evidently. “It is ideal for seniors, disabled or others who may have dexterity limitations or difficulty sighting and controlling a traditional revolver or semi-automatic pistol”, no dangers of accidental shootings there then! I wonder how much of an issue being able to take full advantage of the second amendment actually was, or is, to the elderly and (previously) physically unable to fire weapons? Obviously, the feeling of security that comes from carrying a weapon is something that vulnerable people may desire, but is the fact that easily concealable, lethal weapons are being made even more readily available in a country where almost 30,000 people were killed by firearms last year really a good thing?
What do you think?
